Efficient, Reliable File Delivery

The Digital Fountain® Mobile File Delivery solution enables reliable broadcast, multicast, or unicast file trans-mission capabilities for any IP-based application. Incorporating DF Raptor™ R10 technology, DF Mobile File Delivery ensures complete, error-free delivery regardless of how low or how high the data rate, even in conditions with high levels of packet loss and intermittent connectivity.

Digital Fountain® Mobile File Delivery ensures reliable and error-free content delivery over any IP-based network, whether unicast, multicast, or broadcast, wired or wireless

DF Mobile File Delivery is a complete file delivery system that can be incorporated into any server or client application with minimal effort. It handles all aspects of file delivery, including file announcement, FEC encoding and decoding, and file output, thereby allowing developers to rapidly deploy a complete system. DF Mobile File Delivery provides accelerated time-to-market, reduced development costs, and reduced project risk and complexity.

DF Mobile File Delivery Benefits:
Improved Coverage –increased link margin improves network footprint by 2x to 4x, with a higher certainly of delivery to more consumers

• Greater Mobile TV Loyalty: -
entertainment grade streams over a broader footprint ensure a better experience to more people, creating a loyalty to mobile TV services

Faster File Delivery -
allows operator to deploy MORE content and services without increasing bandwidth allocated to file-casting, yielding greater ARPU

Reduced transmission energy requirements allow operators to more efficiently use spectrum and deploy more services, resulting in greater revenue
 • Reduced computational requirements lowers handset expense as DF Raptor requires less time, less MIPS, and less battery power to decode data
Content can be delivered to receivers in off-hours when other services are not in use, allowing operators to monetize that little used time (e.g. 2:00am – 5:00am), broadcasting with minimal opportunity cost and further driving content ARPU.

Standards Based Approach

Mobile File Delivery enables the development of highly reliable and scalable one-way point-to-point or point-to-multipoint
file transfer applications over UDP/IP. Mobile File Delivery supports the concurrent transfer of multiple files over one or more channels, establishing a file delivery session to manage the transfer until all files have been delivered. It simplifies scheduling and management of file delivery operations by providing mechanisms to create, modify, and close multiple simultaneous file delivery sessions. Mobile File Delivery handles all of the complexities of FEC encoding and decoding, providing a simple API to set the desired FEC parameters.

Mobile File Delivery is based on the IETF’s FLUTE protocol. Both FLUTE and the DF Raptor FEC have been adopted as components of the file delivery services defined by two global standards for wireless networks:

  • Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) over 3GPP GSM/EDGE or WCDMA cellular networks
  • IP Datacast (IPDC) over DVB-H wireless networks
  • OMA BCAST for Mobile Broadcast Services

To facilitate the development of standards-compliant 3GPP MBMS and DVB-H IPDC file delivery systems, Digital Fountain offers variants that are optimized for the respective standard. Each respective version of Mobile File Delivery supports the associated extensions to the FLUTE protocol, including, for example, optional support of a return channel for quality reporting and unicast file repair sessions as well as the capability to parse and interpret the SDP metadata used by MBMS and IPDC to configure and manage file delivery sessions.
